Course Descriptions

Symphonic Band


Credits: 1 credit (½ credit each semester)

Grade Levels: 9-12

Prerequisites: Band/Instructor approval

The LHS Symphonic Band is a participation and performance-based ensemble in which all students will be required to prepare music for festivals, concerts, solo/ensemble, and marching band events.  This course is the primary instrumental music course as it focuses on the development of musical practice, performance skills, ensemble techniques, sight-reading, and music theory through large ensemble music selections.  These selections (compositions) will be performed at 4 major concerts, 1 band festival, and Lilac Parade.  

A $25 class fee will be assessed to cover necessary class expenses such as music, performance venue rental, and festival fees.  An additional charge for uniforms of approximately $75 will be charged for all students requiring a uniform. This charge will be added to the students’ account once each students’ uniform item needs have been determined.

Jazz Band


Credits: 1 credit (½ credit each semester)

Grade Levels: 9-12

Prerequisites: Instructor approval & concurrent participation in Symphonic Band or Choir

The Jazz Ensemble is a participation and performance-based ensemble requiring instructor permission and audition.  It is designed for the advancing musician who is interested in learning styles of music including jazz, funk, rock, samba, etc. and is willing to dedicate the time to do so.  Jazz band meets after school (2:05 - 3:00 PM) to rehearse.  The group traditionally consists of 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, and 4 rhythm instruments.  The band performs at at least one major jazz festival, 4 concerts, and various community functions during the school year. A $45 class fee will be assessed to cover necessary class expenses such as music, performance venue rental, and festival fees.

Choir

 

Credits: 1 credit (½ credit each semester)

Grades: 9-12

Prerequisites: None

This course is a participation, assessment, and performance-based ensemble with an emphasis on learning vocal techniques, music theory, and varying styles of music. Students will learn how to control and maintain their voice in order to perform classical, popular, and contemporary choral pieces. Performances include 4 major concerts, 1 choir contest, and graduation. A $25 class fee will be assessed to cover necessary class expenses such as music, uniform, and festival fees.

Pep Band

 

Credits: None- Extracurricular

Grades: 9-12

Prerequisites: Must be in the LHS Symphonic Band

Pep Band is an extracurricular activity. A prerequisite for being in Pep Band is being in the LHS Symphonic Band. The Pep Band plays rock and pop tunes at all home football and basketball games and at the district and state tournaments. There is an option of lettering in Band through participating the Pep Band and Symphonic Band extracurricular events.
